Comuna 13 is one of 16 districts of the city of Medellin, in which there are a number of different barrios. It has become an attraction for its story of resilience and transformation. In the early 2000s, this neighborhood was considered to be one of the most dangerous places in the world, with high levels of violence due to Narco drug cartels, paramilitary groups and communist guerillas, all involved in wars over money and power. Investments in local art and sports programs, as well as healthcare institutions and education, have helped bring more stability and prosperity to this area, along with a massive influx of tourists, for better or worse.
